TPMS: TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING FOR YOUR ALBUQUERQUE AUTO

Albuquerque motorists may know that all 2008 model year and newer cars, mini-vans and light trucks in Albuquerque come with a tire pressure monitoring system. Many slightly older vehicles around Bernalillo have these systems as well. A tire pressure monitoring system – called TPMS – consists of sensors on each wheel that measure tire pressure. If tire pressure drops 25 percent below the auto manufacturer’s recommended pressure, the sensor sends a signal to a monitoring unit that causes a warning to light up on the dashboard. When Bernalillo car owners see the warning light, they know it’s time to put some air in the tires. There are many benefits to Albuquerque auto owners who drive with properly inflated tires around Albuquerque. First is cost savings. Running at the correct air pressure improves MPG. Driving on under-inflated tires is like driving through sand – it drags down your MPG. Albuquerque drivers will also see longer, more even trea ... read more

SMART ALBUQUERQUE DRIVERS PROTECT AGAINST OVERHEATING

SMART ALBUQUERQUE DRIVERS PROTECT AGAINST OVERHEATING

Engines get hot when they run. This heat can build up and damage vital engine parts, so engines need a cooling system to keep them running. Cooling system failure is the most common mechanical failure in vehicles. This is unfortunate, because these failures are usually easy for Albuquerque motorists to prevent. The radiator is the best-known and most recognizable part of the cooling system. Hoses filled with coolant (also known as antifreeze) connect the radiator to the engine. The coolant draws heat from the engine, and then flows to the radiator. Air passing through cooling fins on the radiator cools the coolant. The coolant then cycles back into the engine to start the process over again. The most critical component of the cooling system, however, is the coolant itself. A mixture of water and coolant/antifreeze helps keep it both from freezing and from boiling away. Either can result in serious engine damage. Different engines require different types of coolant/antifreeze ... read more

FUEL INJECTION: IT KEEPS GETTING BETTER FOR ALBUQUERQUE DRIVERS

FUEL INJECTION: IT KEEPS GETTING BETTER FOR ALBUQUERQUE DRIVERS

Albuquerque auto owners know that engines need to burn fuel to operate. Fuel is pumped from your fuel tank to your sedan engine where it is squirted—or injected—into your engine’s cylinders. This is the function of the fuel injectors. There are two ways to inject fuel into an engine. Fuel needs air to burn, so in the first method, fuel is injected into a port and allowed to mix with air and before it is drawn into the cylinders. In the second method, fuel is injected directly into the cylinders and mixes with air after it enters the sedan engine. Direct injection engines burn fuel more efficiently than conventional sedan engines. Some models can deliver the power of a V8 with the economy of a V6. For example, in one family of engines, the conventional version (a V6) delivers about 250 horsepower. The direct injection version delivers over 300 horsepower and gets about the same gas mileage. The turbocharged version delivers 350 horsepower ... read more

STRAIGHT AND TRUE IN ALBUQUERQUE: WHEEL ALIGNMENT

STRAIGHT AND TRUE IN ALBUQUERQUE: WHEEL ALIGNMENT

Most Bernalillo folks worry about running out of gas or having a breakdown on the side of the road. That is why we practice preventive maintenance on our vehicles — that and to keep our repair bills down. But one important part of preventive maintenance that may get overlooked by Albuquerque drivers is a periodic alignment inspection. Poor alignment causes tires to wear rapidly, unevenly or both. This means they will have to be replaced early, and new tires are more pricey than an alignment check in Albuquerque. Bad alignment can also cause damage to suspension and steering systems, which can be expensive to repair in Bernalillo. Tire wear on misaligned wheels can also lead to blowouts, which are dangerous, can lead to serious accidents, and can seriously damage your sedan. Also, poor alignment itself can be the cause of an accident, since the sedan may not steer properly. One or more wheels on your sedan can be k ... read more

GIVE YOUR ENGINE CLEAN FUEL WITH A NEW FUEL FILTER FROM JIM’S AUTOMOTIVE

GIVE YOUR ENGINE CLEAN FUEL WITH A NEW FUEL FILTER FROM JIM’S AUTOMOTIVE

Your sedan requires plenty of clean fuel to run. If your fuel contains contaminants, your fuel injectors will eventually become clogged up. When this happens, your sedan engine may not get the proper amount of fuel at the correct pressure to run at peak performance. This hurts fuel economy and performance as you drive around Bernalillo. It can also lead to the buildup of harmful deposits on valves and in the combustion chamber. That’s why all vehicles, including sedans, come equipped with a fuel filter somewhere between the engine and the fuel tank. The job of the filter is to clean out little pieces of dirt and contamination. The filter captures the contaminants and keeps them out of the fuel stream. Of course, like all filters, it will eventually get clogged up and need to be replaced at Jim’s Automotive in Albuquerque . If your fuel filter is clo ... read more

FRESH AIR INSIDE YOUR CAR IN ALBUQUERQUE

FRESH AIR INSIDE YOUR CAR IN ALBUQUERQUE

Air quality has certainly become a hot issue in our modern Albuquerque world. We install air filters on our ventilation systems and in our vacuum cleaners. There’s a filter that cleans the air going into our sedan’s engine — so why not one for the air in the passenger compartment? Foreign and domestic manufacturers haven’t been ignoring the issue. Cabin air filters are becoming a standard feature on newer vehicles. These filters can clean particles out of the air down to three microns, which accounts for pollen, dust and most pollutants. Peralta motorists who suffer from allergies or have a respiratory disorder should be a lot more comfortable. And even if you don’t have a medical need for the filter, the cleaner air in your car just might help you breathe better, figuratively as well as literally. Cabin air filters are still fairly new in Bernalillo, so you’ll have to check your sedan owner’s manual to see if you have one. If ... read more
