YOUR VEHICLE IS NOT MAINTENANCE FREE, ALBUQUERQUE CAR OWNERS

A generation ago, Albuquerque motorists seemed to be more inclined to keep their vehicle’s preventive maintenance on schedule. One reason for this may be that vehicles back then were a lot less reliable than they are today. Having your sedan in to your Albuquerque shop every year or two for repairs seemed to be a good reminder to keep the oil changed. For example, almost everyone in Albuquerque used to take their vehicles in for regular tune-ups. Vehicles had mechanical ignition systems, which meant ignition points, spark plugs and coils had to be replaced and the timing adjusted every few years. As long as the sedan was in for a tune-up at Jim’s Automotive, the vehicle was inspected and you took care of any needed repairs at the same time. Today’s engines have electronic ignition systems and engine control computers. Spark plugs can last for up to 100,000 miles. Vehicle reliability has vastly improved in the last few decades, and surveys report fewer problems ... read more

BREATHE FREE IN ALBUQUERQUE: CABIN AIR FILTER REPLACEMENT AT JIM’S AUTOMOTIVE

BREATHE FREE IN ALBUQUERQUE: CABIN AIR FILTER REPLACEMENT AT JIM’S AUTOMOTIVE

There are a lot of new features, both optional and standard, on Albuquerque car owners’ vehicles these days. One you may not have heard of is called a cabin air filter. Simply put, its job is to keep the air in the passenger compartment of your car nice and clean. A cabin air filter is similar to the filter you use on your furnace at home in Albuquerque. Cabin air filters can catch particles down to three microns. By comparison, a grain of sand is 200 microns. So cabin air filters are effective against dust, dirt, pollen, mold spores and most pollutants in our Bernalillo atmosphere. Good news if you suffer from any types of allergies, or if you live in an area in Albuquerque prone to air pollution. Cabin air filters are generally located in the engine compartment or under the dashboard. They can be tricky to access and replace, so you’ll probably want to go to your knowledgeable Jim’s Automotive s ... read more

E-85 FUEL SAFETY ADVICE FROM JIM’S AUTOMOTIVE

Today at Jim’s Automotive we want to talk with you about a very important safety issue. This automotive safety warning is coming from a very unusual source: fire fighting experts. You’ve probably heard of E-85 gasoline being offered in the Bernalillo area. Some newer vehicle models are specifically built to run on E-85 – the rest are not. E-85 gasoline has been developed to fight air pollution and reduce oil consumption. E-85 fuel is a mix of 85% ethanol, a grain-base alcohol, and 15% gasoline. So-called Flex-Fuel vehicles are designed to use either normal gasoline or E-85 gas. The result is lower harmful exhaust emissions to our local Bernalillo community. All gas engines can run with up to 10% ethanol and in fact a lot of gasoline sold in the Albuquerque, New Mexico area does contain some ethanol. The problem comes when well meaning motorists without Flex Fuel certified vehicles put E-85 into t ... read more

COOLANT ANTIFREEZE SERVICE IN ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO

Albuquerque drivers may know that most automotive failures in Albuquerque, New Mexico are tire related, but do you know the second most common cause for vehicle failure? Nope, it’s not teenagers. It is the coolant system. But, if you take good care of your sedan coolant system, it will take good care of you. A sedan’s engine creates a lot of heat – so much heat, that if it is not properly cooled, the engine can lock up, resulting in massive damage and costly repair bills. But when everything is working right, your sedan engine operates at the proper temperature and all is well. Without antifreeze in your cooling system, the water could freeze and cause sedan engine damage. This could be very pricey, not to mention inconvenient. The right mix of water and antifreeze is critical and protects the engine against damage from freezing and overheating. Antifreeze also protects the coolant system against corrosion that could cause the system to fail. The thing to remember is this ... read more
